Attending the FIFA World Cup is the experience of a lifetime. Although the matches and teams are the main attraction, a lot of the fun comes with the buzz and excitement of being right there, amid the roaring crowds. The 2026 World Cup promises to be bigger, better and more exciting than ever.

There will be more countries participating: a record-breaking 48 teams will be vying for the top-ranked positions. And there will be more World Cup hosts in 2026 than ever before too. FIFA has decided to spread the event across three countries: Mexico, Canada, and the United States for a total of sixteen World Cup 2026 locations. This presents an enthralling opportunity for people who love football and adore travelling, offering the potential to take in multiple destinations.

Important 2026 World Cup Dates

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

With the three host countries automatically qualified for the tournament, countries around the world will be engaged in a hotly-contested battle for the remaining 45 places. As the results come in the FIFA website will make the qualified teams known. Qualifying matches end on the 31st of March 2026.

Opening Dates

The tournament will begin on 11 July 2026 in Mexico City and the opening match is sure to be a memorable and spirited event. However, the other two host countries will also be staging a celebration for their opening matches, so save the dates. The USA will be kicking off its World Cup bid in Los Angeles on the 12th of June, the same day that Canada will be playing its first game in Toronto.

Group Stages

The first round of Group Stage matches begins in Mexico on the 11th of July and will continue until the 27th of June 2026. It will be followed by the “Group of 32” elimination matches that will whittle the number of competing teams down from 32 to 16. The Group of 16 will battle it out from the 4th to the 7th of July, and the winners will enter the quarterfinals.

Quarter-Finals to Final Match

From now on the world will be focused on the FIFA World Cup as it gains momentum and excitement builds, reaching fever-pitch in the final match. The quarter-finals run from the 9th to the 11th of July and the semi-finals are played on the 14th and 15th. The third-place playoffs will be hosted in Miami on the 18th of July.

The final match where the world champions will walk away with the honours will be played on 19 July at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey – just five miles outside New York City. Attending will be the experience of a lifetime. Just imagine being in that packed stadium as the world watches and the cheers resound around the globe: the breathless moments, the triumphs, and the crushing defeats all unfolding before your eyes. This is the big one, and competition for tickets will be very stiff indeed.

How to Get Tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026

There are two types of World Cup tickets, but at the time of writing, neither is on sale yet. Instead, you must register interest and wait for FIFA to get back to you.

Hospitality Seating

Hospitality Seating can be seen as ultra-luxury, with access to cushioned seats and the best locations in any stadium. What you get and how much it costs depends on the stadium’s facilities, but this matchday experience includes all the luxury options.

You can benefit from better positioning in the stadium with more legroom. Or you can reserve private boxes with dining facilities and wall-mounted screens so you never miss the best angle for viewing a game-changing moment. As you’d expect, food and beverage options are also far more gourmet than what’s available for regular ticket holders.

There are separate areas for VIPs and local dignitaries, so in theory, anyone with a roomy budget can qualify for hospitality seating. With these tickets not yet on sale, pricing is uncertain, but Sport Business says they’ll start at prices below $1000, and will range up to $2.6m to reserve a 40-seat suite.

One thing is certain: there will be a lot of competition for these spots, so it would be wise to register your interest as soon as possible and be alert for emailed updates. If you’re keen on seeing the most high-profile games, it might be wisest to register interest in both regular seating and Hospitality Seating to hedge your bets.

Regular Seating

While luxury options are attractive, some will prefer getting out there among the roaring crowds. You may wind up standing in lengthy queues and being jostled by the throng, but some would argue that it’s all part of the experience.

Once again, registering interest improves your chances of getting tickets to the matches. Instead of waiting for ticket sales to open, we recommend registering interest right away. There will be 7 million match tickets sold during the FIFA World Cup, but if you want to be at the MetLife Stadium for the cup final, seating is limited to a “mere” 82,500. You will be very lucky indeed if you were to “win” the right to buy one of these coveted tickets.

Team-Specific, Location-Specific or Match-Specific Tickets

There are different ways to register interest. If you choose to support a specific team, FIFA will offer you a package of tickets to follow their journey on the assumption that they qualify and move through to additional rounds. If they fail to qualify or are eliminated, you’re eligible for a refund. Each team plays a maximum of eight games. This is all very uncertain, but it means that if your favourite team does well, you’ll be right there to cheer them on.

Alternatively, you can decide to stay at one location, watching games that are played in a specific stadium. Although you won’t know who will be playing, you stand a chance of seeing a number of matches in a single location.

Finally, you can register interest in specific fixtures. For example, you might try to get tickets for a quarter-final that will be played in Boston, a semi-final in Dallas or Atlanta, and you can always try your luck at getting tickets for the finals in New York. There’s no way you can know who will be playing, but if you get your tickets, you’re certain that there will be an exciting match in store.

What Happens After You Register Interest

When you register interest, there’s a chance, but no guarantee, of getting tickets. It’s important to understand that tickets are allocated in blocks to member associations, in other words, sporting bodies from the countries playing in a particular match.

Then there’s FIFA’s “family” which could be sponsors or football VIPs. On the off chance you know anyone in this inner circle, you could always try leveraging that connection to see if they can pull some strings on your behalf.

The rest of the tickets are up for grabs, and FIFA has not yet confirmed how they will be sold. In the past, they were allocated in two ways: some tickets were offered through lotteries and others were sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you want to improve your chances of getting tickets, it seems likely that registering interest in the costlier seats in any category (hospitality or stadium) will help somewhat. In the past, hospitality tickets have always been sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

You might also stand a better chance of getting a ticket to see lower-profile games, especially when the teams’ supporters would have to travel long distances to get there. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, tickets to attend host countries’ games are sure to be in high demand. As for Cup Final Tickets, the best you can do is register interest and keep your fingers crossed.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Ticketing Phases

The 2026 World Cup is taking a new approach and hasn’t yet published information on ticketing phases. However, if past methods are anything to go by, we can take an educated guess on how ticketing phases will work.

Phase One ticket sales usually begin about 9 months before the tournament begins. If you register interest, you’ll be informed about which tickets you have succeeded in gaining access to. Ticket allocation is determined in a lottery. If there are tickets left over after this, they’re offered for sale. Some tickets are held back for Phase Two ticket sales.

In the second phase of ticket sales, there’s another lottery, after which all remaining tickets are sold on a first-come-first-served basis. This phase usually begins six to seven months before kickoff.

With some people who had tickets to follow a team claiming refunds on tickets to games their team didn’t qualify for, there’s a third phase of ticket sales. These last-minute tickets are sold with no intervening lottery process.

Ticket Prices

2026 ticket prices aren’t available yet, but we can look at ticket prices for the 2022 World Cup to give you an indication of costs. Remember, each type of ticket has several grades depending on where your seat is. The better your view of the match, the higher the price.

In 2022, regular tickets (not Hospitality tickets) were sold at the following prices:

  • Opening matches: $55 to $618
  • Group play: $11 to $220
  • Round of 16 (there was no round of 32 in 2022): $19 to $275
  • Quarter-finals: $82 to $426
  • Semi-finals: $137 to $956
  • Third place match: $82 to $426
  • Final: $206 to $1607

In 2026, prices are sure to be higher, but we will have to wait for FIFA to release pricing information before we can know the exact costs.

Resellers: Buyer Beware

Whenever there’s a high-profile event, there are plenty of “unofficial” sources and tour operators claiming that they can sell you tickets. The FIFA World Cup is no different. The organisation warns that official tickets are only available directly from FIFA

If you encounter someone who claims to be a reseller, they may simply be attempting to make a profit by selling tickets at an inflated price. But, since FIFA limits the number of tickets a person can buy, they’re likely conducting a scam.

Buying tickets from unofficial sources is, at best, a gamble. Since FIFA is very clear about being the only official seller, they would have the right to turn you away for violating their terms and conditions, even if your ticket were genuine.

World Cup 2026 Locations and Your Itinerary

If you’re following a specific team, you won’t be able to plan far in advance of the World Cup. After all, your team could be eliminated, either in qualifying matches or in the early stages of the tournament.

If, on the other hand, you just want to enjoy the experience of attending World Cup games, you’re well-placed to do a little advance planning. Of course, if you want to be absolutely sure of attending matches, you would have to wait for Phase One ticketing to see which tickets you qualify for. However, this should still give you 6 to 9 months to plan your itinerary.

Register interest based on the cities you’d like to visit and the stages of the tournament you’d like to see. Then wait for confirmation and plan accordingly. Although we don’t yet know which teams will be playing, we do know when and where matches will be held.

Each city is a wonderful destination at any time, but the World Cup in particular is a fantastic time to visit. Citizens and travellers alike will be in a celebratory mood, and each city will be putting its best foot forward to show why it’s the perfect choice as a World Cup host. Philadelphia Highlights

As the birthplace of American democracy, there are multiple monuments and sites of historical significance to visit. The Liberty Bell is a landmark attraction and the National Constitution Center will interest visitors from around the world. If you happen to be here for the match on the 4th of July, your visit will coincide with America’s best-loved holiday: Independence Day. What could be more appropriate than celebrating it in Philadelphia?

Philadelphia has a lighthearted side to its personality, and you may enjoy visiting the whimsical Magic Gardens, the characterful Reading Market, or experience the fun of the Philadelphia Zoo.

Rittenhouse Row offers upmarket shopping and dining, and Fairmount Park is the perfect picnic spot. Eager to celebrate your favourite team’s World Cup win? Fishtown has venues to suit every preference.

Where to Stay

The Rittenhouse Hotel: This is the only Forbes 5-star hotel in Philadelphia, and you’ll soon see why it won this honour. From its freshly renovated spa to its grandiose reception rooms and home-like yet lavish guest rooms and suites, there’s nothing about this hotel that doesn’t represent the pinnacle of perfection.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia: Decorated in sleek, neutral shades with Art Deco details and focal points, the Kimpton exudes sheer class throughout. The downtown location is convenient, the rooms and suites luxurious, and the facilities comprehensive.

Sofitel Philadelphia: Rittenhouse Square is Philadelphia’s premier address, and the Sofitel Hotel on the square reflects grandeur at every turn. The decor is a masterful combination of American modernity and old-world, French elegance and spacious suites await the most discerning of the Sofitel’s guests.

New York Highlights

The MetLife Stadium is officially located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but it’s just five miles outside New York, making this city the most exciting of the World Cup 2026 locations.

From the rooftop bars and restaurants of Manhattan to live Broadway shows and private yacht charter day trips, there’s so much to see and do that there’ll never be a dull moment. Shop in Fifth Avenue, SoHo and Brookfield Place. Take a helicopter flip over the New York skyline or dine at world-famous restaurants like Masa, Per Se, and La Bernadin. Arts, culture, music, nightlife: New York has it all.

Where to Stay

Choosing a top three among all the magnificent hotels in New York is a difficult call. After much thought, we recommend:

The Mandarin Oriental, New York: Overlooking Central Park and the Hudson River, few locations could be better than this. The hotel itself offers superb views and decor that’s understated yet supremely elegant. The spa has a five-star Forbes rating, the restaurant is excellent, and guests can qualify for VIP treatment at some of New York’s finest restaurants.

The Aman, New York: Occupying a graceful 1920s building, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the Aman. The interiors are masterpieces of Japanese inspiration, offering oases of calm, and the fine dining options are superb. Refresh yourself at the indoor pool, enjoy a calming hot tub soak, or experience ultimate relaxation at the in-house spa.

The St Regis, New York: At the St Regis, minimalism is out and opulence is the order of the day. From the rooms to the reception areas, everything is done on a grand scale, and the hotel receives praise on every front. The bar is highly recommended, the restaurant serves the ultimate in cuisine, and even afternoon tea is unforgettably luxurious. Naturally, no stone is left unturned in offering facilities to satisfy every preference.
